  1. Global change: Carbon in idle croplands
The collapse of the Soviet Union had diverse consequences, not least the abandonment of crop cultivation in many areas. One result has been the vast accumulation of soil organic carbon in the areas affected.

  2. Bill to control riverside development draws fire
HELENA – Riverside landowners asked state lawmakers last week to scuttle a bill that would require builders to keep their distance from the banks of Montana's rivers and streams.
House Bill 455, sponsored by Rep. Michele Reinhart, D-Missoula, specifies 10 major rivers in Montana as “Big Sky” rivers. Also known as the “Big Sky Rivers Act,” the bill would establish streamside setbacks at either 150 feet or 250 feet from the high-water mark, depending on the slope of the land. The bill also requires up to 150 feet of vegetation.

Plant Cover Crops - Go Green For The Bay
Cover crops are legumes, grasses or small grains that are established after a crop is harvested in the fall. Cover crops are planted to: 1) control erosion during periods of inadequate soil cover; 2) retain a portion of the nutrients remaining in the root zone and make them available for the next crop; and 3) improve infiltration and thereby reduce surface runoff to nearby streams.

  6. Cost of road salt
Late winter is a dirty time of year in Canada. The snow is dirty, the roads are dirty and winter coats, boots and especially cars have a white film on them from the road salt.
We have used a lot of it this winter to keep us safe while driving and walking, however, eventually much of the salt we have been dumping on the roads and sidewalks will be washed into waterways. Other salt that is entrained in snowbanks will end up in soil by the sides of roads.

  7. Snowmelt-generated runoff and soil erosion in Fife, Scotland
The hydrology and contrasting erosional responses of two snowmelt events on arable farmland in Fife, Scotland, are compared. Snowmelt-generated runoff in January 1993 caused widespread soil erosion across eastern Scotland. Gullying was exemplified by three sites in Fife, where thaw of a drifted snowpack was augmented by rainfall to produce a larger erosive response than

  8. New book details cover crop use
Across America, tens of thousands of farmers are planting cover crops, a time-tested method of revitalizing soil, curbing erosion, and managing pests.
Bryan and Donna Davis love what cover crops have done for their corn/soybean rotation. The Grinnell, Iowa couple relies on rye and oats to feed their soil and manage pests on their 1,000-acre, mostly no-till farm.

  9. March 5, 2009--Fences installed to protect Morro Bay watershed (L.A. Times)
A 3-year-old Morro Bay National Estuary program has installed 70,000 feet of streamside fencing as part of an effort to restore wildlife habitat in a nearby watershed of creek channels and meadowlands that have been degraded by grazing stock. Cattle have been traditionally permitted in the Chorro Valley watershed's stream systems just east of the estuary, trampling vegetation along creek banks, encouraging erosion and fouling the water with fecal bacteria.

A forum for members of the International Erosion Control Association Northern Plains Chapter to interact with each other, have a place to comment on all areas of our profession, get input into project problems etc., ask for help from other members, and to generally maintain a sense of community within this chapter.--- --- --- --- --- MINNESOTA, MANITOBA, NORTH DACOTA, SOUTH DACOTA, SASKATCHEWAN, ALBERTA

  11. Soil and sediment contamination assessment more accurate, says researcherSource: Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) Published Mar. 12, 2009Prolonged exposure of soil and sediment invertebrates to toxic Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds (PACs) has large and unpredictable effects on the life cycle of these species, concludes Dutch researcher Miriam León Paumen. These chronic effects can be very different from the effects of short-term exposure to PACs. Therefore, assessments of soil and sediment contamination are more...
