  1. Wetlands erosion raises hurricane risks
The very technology that protects New Orleans from flooding has backfired, environmental experts say.
They say the levees that ring the city have led to the rapid decay of nearby wetlands during the past century, removing a crucial buffer zone that once protected the area from hurricanes.

  2. Group scores 'band-aid' solutions to water problem
In a press statement issued to various media outlets yesterday, Melvin Purzuelo of Green Forum-Western Visayas said that “the cleaning of the sedimentation ponds, installation of the by-pass pipe systems, and putting-up of gabion walls several hundred meters from the reservoir are 'band-aid solutions' and far from any long-term answers to the problem.”

  3. Geosynthetics demand to increase to $2.1 billion in 2012
5 March 2009, Clevland - A new study from The Freedonia Group Inc., shows that demand for geosynthetics is projected to advance 2.5 percent annually to over 900 million square yards in 2012, valued at $2.1 billion. Gains will be promoted by rebounding road and highway construction spending. The study also says that in the near term, demand is also expected to be promoted by components of the Obama Administration’s economic stimulus program that involve public works.

  4. Is Coal Ash in Soil a Good Idea?
Crops across the country are grown in soil amended with coal fly ash—the same substance that caused a massive environmental emergency in December when it gushed from a holding pond at a Tennessee power plant.
Tons of fly ash are routinely added to soil to nourish vegetables, peanuts and other crops, primarily in the Midwest and Southeast. But now the spill has raised questions about whether this longstanding agricultural practice is environmentally sound.

  5. Using Diversity as a Pest Management Tool
Adding plant diversity to a production system in space and time can help break pest cycles. Plants in the same family tend to have similar pests. Crop rotation, planting a series crops from different plant families in the same space in sequential seasons, helps deter the build up of pests that can occur when one crop species is planted continuously. Crop rotation, as described in Section 205.205 in the National Organic Standards, is fundamental to good organic management and serves several functions. As stated in the rule, the producer must implement a crop rotation including but not limited to sod, cover crops, green manure crops, and catch crops. Crop rotation provides the benefits in addition to providing pest management in annual and perennial crops, including: maintenance or improvement of soil organic matter content; management of plant nutrients; and erosion control.

  6. Unique OSU Roadside Vegetation Management Program honored for contributions to people, state
"Most people don't notice roadside vegetation or know that it is there working for them, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, throughout the year," he said. "A properly maintained roadside turf provides beauty while stabilizing the roadway and surrounding soil against the destructive effects of wind and water erosion.

  7. Road salt spreading into our water
Professor says U study is a "wake-up call" to adjust deicing before it creates a significant problem.
Now a University of Minnesota study estimates that 70 percent of the deicing salt used on metro-area roadways does not travel far when it drains off the pavement. It gushes into area wetlands and lakes and seeps into groundwater, and it is making them saltier with each successive year. About 30 percent goes to the Mississippi River.

  8. Erosion control measures up for debate
MOREHEAD CITY - State law prohibits the use of hardened structures such as groins and jetties to control erosion along the coast, but that hasn't silenced discussions of the issue.

  9. Global Warming lectures continue
Wayne Klockner and Nels Johnson from the Nature Conservancy spoke to Drexel University students, faculty and conservancy members Feb. 10 as part of the ongoing Global Warming Series.
Nature Conservancy scientists say the best course of action is to help nature help us. We can protect and restore habitats that limit and disperse floods, capture carbon emissions and prevent damaging soil erosion.

  10. Grass Strips Help Curb Erosion, Herbicide Transport
ScienceDaily (Feb. 11, 2009) — Grass filter strips placed in riparian zones not only curb soil erosion, but can help block and degrade the widely used herbicide atrazine, Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists report
