  1. United States: EPA Proposes Rule Imposing Stricter Stormwater Standards On Construction And Development Activities
Elena Babaeva On November 28, 2008, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed a rule under the Clean Water Act entitled "Effluent Limitations Guidelines and Standards for the Construction and Development Point Source Category." The proposed non-numeric effluent limitations guidelines (ELGs) would require contractors, developers, and others conducting land-disturbing activities to implement specific minimum best management practices (BMPs) for erosion control, sediment control, and pollution prevention. Certain sites could be required to implement stormwater treatment processes in addition to BMPs in...

  3. EPA rule would require best management practices for erosion control
The EPA last month proposed a rule that would require contractors, developers, and others who engage in projects that disturb the land to use specific best management practices for erosion and sediment control, as well as pollution prevention. The rule, which was proposed under the Clean Water Act, would also require projects that involve 10 acres or more to implement storm-water treatment processes. Larger sites would also have to comply with turbidity levels. Mondaq (free registration) (12/08)

  4. Arctic Foundations offers worldwide leadership, innovation and experience in passive ground-freezing technology
Global warming is affecting culture and habitat at the extremes of the earth, according to the Global Warming Project. “Rapid climate change and its effects is fast becoming one of the prime events of the 21st century,” it concluded.
Northern engineer, innovator and entrepreneur Erwin “Erv” Long has been watching land and weather cycles in the North for nearly 60 years, well before the term “global warming” was coined. More and more he understands the importance of keeping frozen ground frozen — stabilized soil is inherent to Arctic construction and infrastructure.

  6. The Oceans’ Shifting Balance
or the chemical reaction used to form calcium carbonate, the structural element in corals and the shells of many marine animals. As the oceans acidify, shells will simply dissolve. The growth of coral reefs will slow, and their structural integrity would be weakened, making them more vulnerable to storms and erosion. That would be a catastrophic loss. The list of potential long–term effects to oceanic life is only beginning to be explored.

  7. SUBSIDING HOPES
Southeast Louisiana is sinking under its own weight, even as sea levels rise worldwide. Only perpetual vigilance can avert disaster.
The culprit: subsidence of soft marsh soils, combined with coastal erosion.
Of all the threats facing southeast Louisiana in the age of global warming, subsidence is the most daunting, because it is a problem without a solution.
Sea‐level rise can be addressed by cutting the emissions of greenhouse gases that warm the climate. Coastal erosion can be battled with river diversions and stopping the canal dredging that has allowed the salty Gulf of Mexico to eat through thousands of miles of wetlands, marching ever closer to population centers.
