  2. Old logging practices linked to high erosion rates
Clear-cut logging and related road-building in the 1950s and 1960s in southern Oregon's Siskiyou Mountains disrupted soil stability and led to unprecedented soil erosion made worse during heavy rainstorms, report University of Oregon researchers.

  3. Degraded rivers, unsustainable farming catalysts for soil erosion
Western Cape rivers are generally degraded and unstable, said Western Cape Department of Agriculture’s (DoA’s) Hans King.br>He explained that this was caused by the flourishing invasive alien plant species in rivers, the disappearance of indigenous riverine plants, the narrowing of river channels, owing to developments in the flood plains, and the bulldozing of river beds by landowners.
King was one of the speakers at the International Erosion Control Association Southern Africa Chapter conference, recently held in George, in the Western Cape province.
He said that a clear dynamic of the rivers is the knock-on effect of erosion. Runaway erosion

  4. Climate Change Expanding Dead Zones in Great Lakes, Other Waters
Nitrogen and phosphorous-laden sediments flowing into Lake Erie from inland sources are a primary cause of oxygen-starved dead zones. This animation shows sediment plumes in Lake Erie during March 2010.
Areas of low oxygen are 30 times more prevalent in the nation’s waterways now than they were in 1960, according to a recent federal report. And climate change means they will continue to worsen.

  9. Appropriate technology vs poverty
Sometimes, we just have to look under our noses to uncover profitable business opportunities. Agricultural engineer Dr. Justino Arboleda, winner of the Y2005 BBC Awards for World Entrepreneur, was dean
of the Bicol State University Department of Agriculture when he did intensive studies on why the coconut farmers were poor. He confirmed what the economists had been saying all along: low productivity because of low access to technology was a major reason for the widespread poverty in coconut producing areas.
As a graduate student at Tokyo University, Arboleda observed the use of synthetic textiles for soil erosion control in road and other construction projects in Japan. He later developed
